Molecomb Corner has claimed its first victim of the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
A BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe crashed while attempting to navigate the Goodwood Festival of Speed's iconic hillclimb course on Friday during an exhibition run.
The car, driven by Tom Diment, carried too much speed into Molecomb corner, a deceptive left-hander roughly halfway up the course that's well-known for catching out even the best drivers. The car washed to the outside and made contact with the protective barrier of hay bales, causing heavy damage to the front end and deploying the airbags. Scrolling back through Goodwood's live stream, the driver can be seen out of the car, conscious, and walking freely. It's likely they did not suffer any major injuries.
The B8 crash is that the first incident of the weekend for the 2021 edition of the Festival of Speed, which begun festivities on Thursday. On Thursday, organizers found out a chicane before Molecomb corner to chop speeds into the bend, curbing the likelihood of a crash. Those barriers were removed for Friday's runs.
Knowing the Festival of Speed and therefore the drivers' willingness to push the bounds of their cars for an opportunity at victory during the timed shootout runs, we've a sense this would possibly not be the last time we see a car explode before the weekend ends.
